Taming the Gaze? is a project between art, philosophy and psychoanalysis. It is the first exhibition of a-work-in-progress by the art collectiva “entre – raum für experimentelle bildtheorie” (Vienna) which investigates the matter of the “gaze” or “glimpse” within Jacques Lacans approaches to the theory of image.

Nach der Ausstellung in Athen vom 11. April bis 6. Mai 2011 wandert die Schau, um weitere Arbeiten ergänzt, nach Thessaloniki.

The question “Taming the gaze?” refers to a field of tension. On one hand there is the need for behavioral control and thus the cultural and social adjustment of the gaze and the act of gazing. On the other hand there is the vitality and subversive power of an “untamed gaze” which undermines norms, irritating common perspectives and throwing into question our sense of order.

The current project is exploring how art is dealing with these conflicting poles. Positions of contemporary art that are related to that topic will be shown in a series of exhibitions.
